a: Family responsibilities: respondent score depended on whether or not he mentioned "family" on the open-ended question "What are some of the responsibilities you have at home, at work, and elsewhere?"
b: Leisure time:  measured by subjective estimates of  the percentage of time the respondent felt he could spent as he wished.
C: Number of daily activities: measured by the number of answers to the uestion "What are some of the things you do every day?".
D: Requests for assistance:  how many professional agencies the respondent had requested help for "personal problems in living"
