Operationalization
Participants were asked permission to contact two or three people "who know you pretty well" and provide the adresses. These peers were contacted by mail and asked to rate how the participant felt in 14 areas of life and about life as a whole.

Life as a whole was rated using the same question on which participants had rated their own happiness:
How do you think X feels about his/her life as a whole?
