The interviews were conducted among whites, coloured people and Indians in both large and small urban areas using multi-stage cluster sampling. Sampling procedures among blacks were as follows: In the urban township areas random samples were drawn from address lists, which were stratified by areas relating to ascertainable socio-economic differences. In the peri-urban squatter areas and in rural areas a form of systematic sampling was used, based on interviewing points appearing at distances of equal intervals along routes and thoroughfares, with random distance starting points.
