SampleProbability stratified sample
Subjects were drawn from the roster of families whose children attended public school in the greater Boston area. The sample was stratified so that at each grade level half of the children were boys and half girls; within each of the four groups thus formed half had employed mothers, defined as working at least 17,5 hours per week for at least 3 months prior to being interviewed for this study. Non employed mothers were defined as working less than 8 hours per week. Letters were send by the school to the families. Interested parents provided the project with their telephone numbers and were contacted in order of random by phone. Only Middle class families were included (fathers occupation Class III or above on the Hollingheads Scale)

Parents jointly used a chart to indicate 5 typical week days and for 2 typical weekend days the hours during which the target child and each parent were home and awake; they then indicated the nature of the child- parent interaction that typically occured during each of those hours. Each parent was interviewed in a separate room by a same sex interviewer
