Operationalization
TREATMENT:
Computer- and internettraining during 5 months. Participants followed an initial training of 9 hours by a computer consultant to groups of 6 with 2 participants per computer. Trainuing comprised of basic computer skills and e-mail and internet instruction. After this training help was available during the first 2 months for 3-4 hours/week and for 1 hour/week during the last 3 months.
Several factors were also monitored: length of time necessary for training, amount of computer usage, and types of problems encountered.
Participants were asked to complete computer use logs at each session, which provided data on when and how much computer time was spent, what applications were used, and types of problems encountered. Assistants completed similar logs. 4 months after completion of the study telephone interviews were conducted to determine the extent to which their computer use continued.
2 newsletters were sent to participants to encourage computer use, and a scheduled meeting was organized to discuss problems.
